Course Policies
Grades will be calculated according to a point system. Quizzes will generally be 20-30 points. Tests and projects are generally 100 points. J.A.T. checks are generally 5-30 points. Participation will be about 250 points over the course of a term.
For example, during the fall semester,
J.A.T. checks ~ 200 points
If 6 quizzes are given that are 25 points each ~ 150 points
If 4 tests are given ~ 400 points
Participation ~ 250 points
---------
~1000 possible points
1. Exams – Once your grade going into an exam has been determined, the fall exam will count 20% and the spring exam will count as 25% of your grade
2. Homework Policy – Homework will be assigned in this class every day. Homework may consist of practice from the textbook, but will often take the form of questions that will ask you to elaborate and extend what you already know. Work will be checked for completeness as well as accuracy. Homework will be checked throughout the term. All homework is collaborative and sourced unless otherwise specified.
LATE WORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!
3. J.A.T. – Journal of Advanced Thought. You will need to bring a 3-ring binder to class each day. This journal should contain:
Your current homework as well as all prior homework with corrections
Your graded quizzes and tests
(Most importantly) Your daily notes from class discussions and presentations
4. Tutorials – I am available during every one of my off periods as well as after school on most days with the exception of the winter term(Basketball season). My schedule is available on my website. To ensure that I am available, simply schedule time with me and make sure that I write it down when you do or send me a reminder email.
5. Suggestions for success in this course:
Ask questions – the responsibility for learning is on the shoulders of the student. A teacher can’t help you unless they know you have a question.
Be flexible – daily activities and homework will vary.
Verbalize your thinking - you will be asked to think in this course and the more time spent thinking and sharing your thoughts, the better you will become at it.
6. Academic Policy Statement - Mathematics
Academic Honesty
The department has realistically high expectations for academic honesty, academic effort, behavior, and attitude.Students are encouraged to collaborate on homework assignments, but they may not simply copy another’s assignment. Students may not misrepresent someone else’s work as their own.
Students may not look on another’s paper during a test or quiz.
Students may not have or use unauthorized materials during a test or quiz.
Students may not share information with others about a test after taking the test, nor may they collect information about a test before taking a test.
Any student who violates these standards will receive, at the discretion of the teacher and the department chair, a severe grade penalty. The student may receive other penalties through the Academic Dean’s office.
7. Test Make-up Policy
Students are expected to make up tests immediately upon return to school after an absence. Failure to do so may result in a grade penalty. Exceptions to this rule are at the teacher’s discretion. Chronic patterns of missing tests will be subject to review by the Department Chair and the Academic Dean.
